"The Bombing of Dresden."  From Flickr User Stuck in Customs. (Creative Commons Licensed)

Apparently, when they rebuilt this church, the Dresdner Frauenkirche, a few years ago, they reused thousands of stones salvaged from the bombed church in the rebuilding.

  1. Wonderful photographer. Germany has a tradition of using rubble symbolically.

I know the one in Stuttgart called the Birkentopf.

These panoramas of it are interesting but don't capture its power, seen not from the top but driving up. The Stuttgarters took the rubble of the city -- a huge amount from the bombing --and built a literal mountain from it. They planted a forest and park on it, but as you drive to the top, bits of the rubble start to appear from the earth. Quite striking are the facades with classical statuary. Some pictures here, but still not the effect.
