Image of the Day

Niagara Falls, circa 1853-1860.
From the Library of Congress, America's First Look into the Camera: Daguerreotype Portraits and Views, 1839-1864 Collection.

  1. Quite evocative in the tint and sense of time, especially if you've been at the spot. I have. You can't get that close these days! I wonder what making a fenced in viewing area has done to "tame" the wildness. I get a sense from this picture that is somehow more wild than my memory of the falls. I was at this spot a year ago,

  2. Never been there myself. Yet. Somewhat inexcusable given my rather close proximity to it.

But good point about the sense of time. I love old photos for that exact reason. The silhouettes of the men, with their hats and formal wear only faintly visible...I wonder about the fellow all in white.
